Trichology: The Science of Scalp & Hair!

(Inspired by the article:  A Career in Beauty Care with Mrs. Arlette Knight-Olton https://rethinksource.com/a-career-in-beauty-care-with-mrs-arlette-knight-olton/)

We recently interviewed the President of the Barbados Beauty Professionals Association (BBPA), Mrs. Arlette Knight-Olton. She is the Owner and Operator of 101 Style Salon in Barbados, and a highly trained and experienced cosmetologist and trichologist. Arlette introduced us to the world of trichology and explained that trichologists focus on scalp disorders such as psoriasis, eczema, thinning hair, hair loss, and other diseases of the scalp, etc. So let’s take a closer look at what these professionals do and how they can help you.

HOW TRICHOLOGISTS ARE TRAINED

Arlette was first trained as a cosmetologist, and because of her love for education and knowledge, she was then led to becoming a trichologist as well. She trained for approximately four years for her certification, which also involved 20 hours of clinical work. Part of the course dealt with nutrition, as a well-balanced diet is important for hair care as well.

So we learned that becoming a Trichologist requires years of education and training from experienced professionals who have studied both human biology and hair care techniques. To earn certification as a trichologist, students must attend specialized courses that cover topics such as:

  • anatomy and physiology
  • medical terminology
  • dermatology/skincare
    •  https://worldtrichologysociety.org/what-is-trichology/
  • cosmetic procedures and products
  • diagnostic methods for identifying common scalp and hair disorders.

Not only do these courses ensure that potential trichologists have all the necessary knowledge and skills required for their job, but they also help them stay up-to-date on all the latest trends in the beauty industry, which enables them to properly advise their clients on how best to take care of their skin and hair.

HOW TRICHOLOGISTS HELP PATIENTS

A trichologist can diagnose various conditions such as alopecia, telogen effluvium, dandruff, psoriasis of the scalp, and any other condition that affects hair growth or texture. In some cases, they may also treat cosmetic issues such as split ends, dullness of the hair, mechanical damage which comes from tight braids, etc,

Trichologists use their knowledge to help improve the overall health of the patient’s scalp and hair by providing advice on diet and lifestyle changes to promote healthy growth. This can include prescribing specific treatments such as topical medications or recommending vitamins or supplements for better scalp health. In addition to these treatments, trichologists may also suggest changes in styling habits to reduce stress on the follicles which can lead to healthier-looking tresses over time.

For those experiencing significant hair loss due to various conditions, such as lupus, high blood pressure, diabetes and some medications. Trichology can help slow down this process through effective treatment plans aimed at restoring balance within the scalp environment. This might include scalp massages, supplementing with certain vitamins or minerals that are known to encourage healthy cell regeneration in order to stimulate new growth where needed. Trichologists may also recommend laser therapy or other treatments depending on what is found during their examination of the patient’s scalp and general medical history.

HOW TRICHOLOGIST WORK WITH OTHER PROFESSIONALS

Trichologists are often part of a larger team that includes dermatologists and other specialists to provide comprehensive care for patients with scalp and hair issues. Arlette shared that trichologists bridge the gap between a Dermatologist and a General Practitioner. A trichologist can work along with the doctor to ensure that the client is using a holistic approach to their scalp issue. It is important to make the client comfortable if experiencing scalp discomfort, therefore, medications may be prescribed by the doctor. However, working in partnership with the trichologist the client can also be guided regarding various hair products and their diet amongst other details that may also address the cause of the hair/scalp issue.

Therefore, trichologists are essential members of any medical team tasked with providing comprehensive care for individuals suffering from hair loss or other related conditions affecting their scalps and tresses. By utilizing their knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pathology, mycology, dermatology, and nutrition, they are able to better understand and diagnose various conditions that affect scalp health. Furthermore, their expertise helps them create effective treatment plans tailored specifically for each individual patient that can help restore balance within the scalp environment; leading to healthier-looking locks over time.

If you’re concerned about your own scalp condition or noticing signs of thinning hair, then it’s best to consult with a qualified trichologist immediately in order to get back on track toward beautiful tresses!
